I'm still in the process of filling out my Canadian decimals, and have acquired a few proof like sets, mint sets, Oh Canada sets, etc. that fill the gaps in some years (e.g. 1997 quarter and loonie, 1999 caribou quarter).

I'm wondering what the general opinion is on opening these sorts of sets to take a coin or two out and put into 2x2s for the binder. It doesn't seem like the sets have much value (looking at ebay), but it's a lot easier to say a coin is a PL if it's still in the wrapper.

Does it impact value drastically to take a coin or coins out of a set?

Thanks CCF!

It hurts my heart every time someone opens a mint/proof set. I personally keep the set as is and leave a small card that says "check mint set", but there are others who dont. Here in Korea they stopped minting certain coins for circulation in the mid 90s, but they are still produced in mint sets. Thus, folks will open the relatively cheap sets to fill a slot. I say, if the coin is available any other way, then look for it that way. If not, then open it if you please. As for the value I can only reference Korean coins, but they don't get too much more expensive or cheaper when you pull them out.
Rest in Peace

The value of almost any collectable has a base in the ease or difficulty of locating those items in as issued condition.

For the last couple of decades the US mint sets are in abundance to the point that there are far more sets sitting in boxes than there are active collectors.

It is most unlikely that they will ever achieve any level approaching scarcity no matter how many sets are cut up.

Crack it open. It's the only way the remainder of the mass produced sets will ever be worth anything more than what they are now. which is less than my cost when RCM issued them enmasse..

Current nomenclature has sets up to 1967 as PL. Those post 1967 are BU (NBU, MS NC etc). Struck with a different process than circulation coins so not interchangeable. The specialty sets (O Canada, Baby etc) were changed to UNC (circulation) coins in 2006 and the 'traditional' pliofilm coin set was also changed to UNC as of 2011. As of 2011 no more BU coins were struck. As you say, some coins were only struck in BU in some years so ask yourself if you are collecting all circulation coins, or all years of caribou quarters or whatever you like. It's your collection so do whatever makes you happy. For the date ranges you're talking about it doesn't make much difference to the value one way or the other.

Can someone confirm that other than the proof sets, that there were no regular 1997 to 2000 quarters in circulation.
And is that also true of the 1992 quarter.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing with some of my proof coin sets. I rarely look at them because its a bit of a process to get the sets out of the boxes so I'm considering removing them from the RCM boxes and putting them in saflips so they fit in my book. I'm pretty sure I'll get more enjoyment out of seeing them in my book.

There is not much value in those sets you speak of, so my answer is no. More importantly, if you want to cut apart those sets and enjoy your coins in an album or in 2x2s - that is what matters. This is a hobby - how you enjoy it should be the main driver...
