Like many here, I've been looking through batches of old quarters online and at shows. If I find one with no stars under the eagle, but its date is worn off (G4), how can I verify if it is a 1916 or an early 1917? I've noticed there is a BIG difference in value.

May only be an AG3? What else differentiates?

Look at the rivets on the shield. Clear rivets means 1917.

I have shown the comparison image above before, but I don't know who created it for proper reference credit.
Any idea whose it is?

VERY helpful! THANK YOU VERY MUCH. I've saved a copy for reference.

I've seen some other pages that tried to describe these differences, but the wording was not clear. Several had pictures that were blurry, and even with the descriptions, I couldn't figure out what change they were talking about. THIS one had several clear indications that make it easy for me to understand how each differs. That probably saved me from a potentially costly mistake in a future purchase. Much appreciated.

Also, some tips for ebay lots that don't show the reverse. I made this image in 10 minutes with Microsoft Word but it should still work.

Maybe these will help? (The lack of Shield Rivets and the Ankle Fold are pretty much dead give-aways). 1916 SLQ (Bought from "Johnny Countdown", RIP my friend!!) 1917 SLQ

As it happens, I just used exactly the comparison image from this thread (well, a different copy of it, but the same picture) to verify that the dateless SLQ I bought yesterday is, indeed, an 1917.
(I only paid $3 for it, though, so it's a bargain anyway. Put it in my 7070... up to 21 holes filled now!)

Benja, there is something seriously wrong with the olive branch in that type 2 image. It's missing four or five leaves.

Quote: Benja, there is something seriously wrong with the olive branch in that type 2 image. It's missing four or five leaves. No, I think it's correct for type 2 (I checked my example). That's type 2 as in 1917-30, though, which might have confused you slightly. [EDIT: sorry for not posting this until a week later.]

Interesting about the Leaves, or lack of, on the "L" of LIBERTY for the Type II. I just looked for the hair style on the OBV and the stars on the REV.

You right it is, but this thread is to show the differences between the 1916 and 1917 type 1 quarters. I will admit though I hadn't realized how different the type 2 olive branch was. I learned something new, thanks.
