Interesting lesson in supply and demand. How would you have liked to have recently paid $3000 for a rare coin, only to have its value plummet to zero because of the discovery of a large hoard? Just think, maybe there's 20,000 uncirculated 1916-D dimes sitting somewhere that, when discovered, will destroy the market value of this key date. LOL

Just out of curiousity,I bought two of the 100.00 chips on ebay for 4.99 a piece......The guy said that these chips came from the stash in mississippi...

I now own two 3,000 dollars chips for a grand total of 11.98...Talk about a great investment

there were some rare dates in the Morgan series before the big sale the Government has with the GSA hoard coins. Anytime there is a big pile of coins found and sold all at once the market plummets on those items. Not to mention the grades that came from the GSA coins made even some high grade coins not worth very much. I am just glad I wasn't collecting before they released all of them because I would have probably been one of the people that overpaid for some of the dates if I had collected then

The SS Central America recovery added several thousand mint state 1857-S Double Eagles to the market depressing the market. However, they are still relatively rare and do command multi-thousand dollar prices, just not quite as high as other mint state coins of similar years and mintages. In this case, the provenance of the coins have probably helped to stabilize the prices a bit.

The GSA sale that Bryan mentioned is probably one of the best examples. I believe that there were several coins worth hundreds-low thousands but they found multiple bags of them in Treasury vaults thus killing the prices on some.
