Scored another week off of work at my real job, so I get to work at the shop all week this week! A couple weeks ago a Canadian dealer called and wanted to buy all of the silver Canadian nickels, so I spent the few hours I had beyond my real job sorting those for sale to him...but today I finished that up and got to what I have been waiting for.

I have always liked the Indian Head cents, but have never really gotten to look at any real numbers of them ...Now I get to look at a few thousand ! A few hundred so far, nothing major , but a couple of lamination cracks and these two coins at least put a little excitement in the day.

The first one I found was the 1887 with a reverse Cud. I really wish this coin was not so worn, I think the Cud would be much more dramatic if it were a nicer coin- but I like it anyway ! Sorry about the cropping on the pics of the whole coins, my camera has a hard time focusing on the eyepiece of the scope if I move it away from the glass...blah blah blah...working on it

The next one I found is the 1896 Re-Punched Date. I believe this coins was "lacquered" at one time since there are small spots one the reverse that still have a clear coating stuck to them. I think cleaning this off (and not very well) is what caused the uneven color on the obverse. You can see the "shiny" remnants of the lacquer near the rim over the right side wreath at the top, and some near the N in CENT...too bad, this is a four diamond coin ! You should be able to see the remnants of the re-punched 6 , I have highlighted the areas of interest. I hope I can find some more interesting stuff this week and get it on here this weekend.

If anyone has any suggestions as to other references I should use (besides CPG) to find varieties and errors in this series, I would appreciate it. I look for RPD's on most all of them since they exist for most every year, and the DDO's and DDR's listed in CPG..any biggies I might miss ? The coins I am looking at tend to be fairly worn, so dates in denticles...hair..things like that are tough to catch without other diagnostics...I am guessing the Snow book is the way to go huh ? Thanks for the help...enjoy the coins !

I would agree...that looks like a RPD (6/6E?), but I don't know which one precisely because I don't have the Snow guide for that year. There's a number of 6/6 varieties.

I'm sure you're looking for the real hot ones, such as the 1873 DDO, 1865 DDR, 1867/67, 1887 DDO, 1882 MPD, 1888/7 (Snow-1 and Snow-7), 1894/1894 and 1897 MPD. Those are most of the big ones. You can get attribution guides here.

Thanks KurtS, I now have the Richard Snow book in front of me- time to cram ! The RPD pictured is the one listed in the CPG as FS 011.4, as far as I can tell. In the Snow book it is listed as S1, and very scarce. Most of the IHC's I am looking at right now date after 1880, but the next batch should get further back .

Most of the pictures for the MPD's are of better condition coins, are these difficult to impossible to see on worn coins ? I know the varieties that have them sticking out of the neck should be fairly easy to spot, but the ones in the denticles and hair - do they disappear with wear or remain visible ? Thanks for your help, I hope I find some more goodies !
