It is definitely not an alloy problem. It is as Chuck suggests an environmental problem and being burned is about a 99.9% chance as to the cause of the damage.
The reason that some of the coin is still "silver" colored on the reverse is that another object, probably a coin, was on top of that portion and that part was therefore unaffected by the original cause of the discoloration.
