Thanks for the evaluation UltraRant! I was hoping you had seen it. So, between the 1/4 Balboa and 10 Øre, I've made back more than half of what I paid for all 475 coins and still have hundreds to go through! I didn't find anything post-worthy this evening (nothing too interesting or worth more than $2 at the most). I've gotten frustrated a few times because I couldn't find a coin in Krause. Eventually I realize my Krause is 20th-Century and the coin is 19th or 21st.

well spotted! Nice clash! Too bad that there wasn't anything more of interest in the pile. The good news is that it's not too expensive to acquire a new pile and see what happens there. I find that a very interesting sport, coin pile hunting, every now and then.

I set these aside as interesting the other day. 1949 is a key date for German coinage and I got several. Unfortunately, the '49J 10 pfennig is harshly cleaned and the 1 pfennig looks cleaned as well. It would be great if any of the others could make XF:

Though in bad shape and not rare, I also got two sales tax tokens in the bunch that I posted here: http://goccf.com/t/295316Great Depression and WWII-era history is fascinating to me.

German coins from 1948 and 1949 are slightly different from what followed in 1950, as the text on the obverse is different. But I won't call these coins rare.
1948 and 1949 saw a renewed startup of German minting, the first Post WWII coins being struck. But despite being one or two year types, they're not rare. For example, the 1949 J 10 pfennig has a mintage of well over 150 million, which is a lot according to European standards.
I would keep the German coins apart anyway, as you can still change them for Euros at the German bank, in case you'll visit here one day.

That brings me to a question if anyone has the knowledge available readily: what European coins are exchangeable for Euros and what coins are still in use? I got three Euro cents in the lot so, that's obvious but, I got coins from (off-hand): Iceland Finland Norway Sweden Belgium Ireland Great Britain Netherlands France Spain Portugal Czechoslovakia Austria Yugoslavia Poland Italy Greece Latvia Bulgaria Hungary

Still valid (non-euro):
Iceland: basically all after 1981 Norway: all current 1, 5, 10 and 20 kroner Sweden: all new (2016) 1, 2, and 5 kroner, all current 10 kroner (also before 2016, but the current type) Great Britain: almost all after Decimal Day (15 February 1971), with the exception of the large coins and the previous Pound Sterling coin. Only the bi-metallic one is now valid. Poland: All current coins (1990 and onward) Bulgaria: all current coins (1999 and onward) Hungary: current coins (1992-today, 5 Forint and up only. 1 and 2 Forint and all Filler coins can't be used anymore).
Still exchangeable, for what I know:
German Mark (Bundesrepublik Deutschland only, 1948 - 2001) Austrian Schilling (1945 - 2001)
No value: Finland Belgium Ireland Netherlands France Spain Portugal Czechoslovakia Yugoslavia Italy Greece Latvia
Please do note that the Dutch gulden had silver in circulation until it was withdrawn: the last silver guldens (.720) and rijksdaalders (2.5 gulden, .720) were struck in the 1960s, but remained in circulation until 2001 Please also note that this also goes for the Swedish krone: until retirement of the old style coins in 2016, all coins struck from 1873 were still legal tender, including the silver ones. Sweden issued some denominations in silver until the early 1970s. Third, larger German coins, like 5 DMark, were silver for a while and remained technically in circulation until 2001. Same goes for some larger Austrian Schilling coins.
Finally: I'm not 100% sure if there's still a possibility to exchange Latvian Lats, as Latvia converted to the euro for not too long ago. In most countries, however, the window for exchanging was rather small. I don't have any spare Lats, so I haven't checked.
I hope this helps.

Ok, then I misunderstood that part. I thought it went out already. Nevertheless, you still have a few weeks to spend it then.

Many thanks for the replies UltraRant & Coopertron! Once I find time, I would like to go through everything, find what coins are still spendable or convertible to euros and calculate the conversion to US$.
