I found this in a bin of world silver coinage being sold as "junk". I'd never come across this issue before, and when I looked it up, I discovered that was probably on account of the mintage being a paltry 20K. Despite so few being made, there still isn't any great premium attached to them.
Size, weight, and fineness all precisely mimic the specifications of an American silver dollar. A lot of the Dominican Republic's coinage over the years was struck by the U.S. Mint, but I can't confirm in this particular case if that was so.
The coat of arms side (which in this instance is considered to be the obverse) is attributed to Casimiro Nemesio de Moya. The portrait side is the work of the prominent English engraver and coin designer Thomas Humphrey Paget.
