I'm calling this the crop circle nickel. But I have no idea what would cause these circles. The encompass the entire reverse. They are faint, and won't wipe off.Although hard to see in some of the pics you can see they run through either side of Monticello. Very hard to picture. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Those look like "lathe lines". Nice find.

Lathe lines. The mint is supposed make it so they're gone and not on the coin. Again the mint failed big time because they forgot to remove the lathe lines. Great find!

It's an interesting kind of variety.

There is some more info about lathe lines here:

Your 2008 nickel variety appears to have been recorded on that site.

That's funny you both posted the same site I was looking at! I did look through the coins listed there and did not find any of the markers on any of those coins.I do thank you all for the info!

Really cool find, I've never found one. The mint was supposed to polish them off of the die stock, looks like a liquid lunch that day!

Looks like another year to watch for these. Nice to see they forgot to polish the end of the stock material before creating a new die. Those lines are the clue that it was forgotten. Not to be confused with die scratches. They tend to run across the coin and not just in the center of the die.

Is there a premium for these kinds of errors? I'd suspect it to be too minor or unknown?

There would be a small premium. I would guess $3-5.
