If it's okay, I will claim the win (thanks! ) and post a challenge. I apologize for not being present, lately.

The challenge is simple: what is the oldest coin you own that was issued by a country that still exists?

The above coin was issued by Spain (albeit in the Mexican colony) in 1751. I have older and newer coins that are not so directly linked to an extant country.

I know things change, so leniency is accepted from the start. If the direct connection is vague, please provide an explanation.

The first to post the oldest wins! Let's give it through the weekend, so this ends 12 a.m. EST Monday, November 12, 2018.

From a country that hasn't changed much in terms of ethnic makeup, language, culture, or general territory claims:

Left coin is an early Chinese Ban Liang, from the late Qin or very early Han dynasty, 221-187 BC, within a few decades of the unification of China.

Issued under the oldest still-reigning dynasty, albeit now under a different constitution - Japan, Ko-Kanei Tsuho, 1636-1668

Great idea! Not counting a couple coins from ancient Judea, here is my oldest coin from Israel. It is a 25 mil dated 1948 AD and I believe it is the first coin issued by the nascent Jerusalem mint. The whizzing on this coin is another example of my grandfather's efforts to "improve" the surface finish of the coins in his collection--evidently a somewhat common practice in the 1950s.

Are you certain of the date on that one, Spence? I'm kinda thinking it's 1940. I see the explanations for it, but it seems that 1948 in Hebrew would have one more character than what is on the coin. I have no idea if that matters or not, just curious.
