Here is a 1/96th Stater similar to yours @pepactonius (625-600 BC). I apologize for the poor quality of the pics, but I really am not good at photographing gold--don't get much practice...   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

Tough challenge when you get down to the nitty-gritty; archaic Greek coins are notoriously difficult to attribute to within a time period more than a century wide. Possible oldest coin: Ionia or thereabouts, proto-coin electrum 1/24th stater, c. 650-550 BC, OR it could be an un-struck prepared planchet?  Oldest with certainty: Miletos, Ionia AR 1/12 stater, before 494 BC  These very common coins were struck to pay soldiers and mercenaries in the Ionian Revolt, which was crushed and Miletos razed to the ground in 494 BC. Honorable mention, probably the only non-classcal coin we will see here India, Gandhara Janapada AR Shatamana / double-siglos 600 - 325 BC   India's first coin, minted in present-day Afghanistan/Pakistan which was a Persian satrapy at the time. Minted with little change for almost 300 years, although this one is almost certainly from before 450 BC. |

Thanks folks. Before I get us started on the next challenge, I'd first like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and note that I may on CCF a little less for the next few days. Therefore I will plan to wrap up this challenge on Sunday, the 25th of November. You should have plenty of time to sift through your collection for this one. I recently picked up another uniface Pfennig of medieval Austria and was pretty amazed with the the image. Struck in the range of 1282 to 1308 AD under the authority of Albrecht I, the main design element is what we modern folk would call a smiley face or perhaps a "happy face emoji". Szego describes the obv as "Round face inside border of wings(?)". In researching Albert I, it sounds like he was not always a joyful king and in fact was murdered by a nephew who had been disinherited. And yet, here we have this clear example of happy money.   Therefore, please post your coins, tokens, medals, exonumia, etc. that best symbolize happiness. I recognize that "happiness" can be interpreted in different ways so please include a blurb along with your pics to explain your rationale for selecting that specific piece to share. I will semi-randomly pick a winner on this Sunday. "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."
