Wow what is that bd251?
I love Japanese coins but am lousy at translating them.

It's a 1989 5 yen, Heisei (Akihito) year 1. There's also a 1989 5 yen that's Showa (Hirohito) year 64. The only difference is the era/reignal year characters on the lower obverse (right side on bd251's pic). Here's the 1989 Showa obverse:

Yes, 5 yen Heisei year 1 (1989). I actually hadn't dated this coin until last night and had a little trouble doing so. Apparently, a different character is used for the first year rather than the number one.
Given to me by my grandfather, this and a few other common Japanese coins have been in my collection since it's beginnings. My grandparents were missionaries to Japan for 40 years. My grandpa taught English at several schools and received the Order of the Rising Sun for his contributions to education in Japan.

The "Year 1" actually makes sense - in Japanese the character is "Gan" which means Start/Beginning. Only two emperors have used Gan on their coinage; Taisho from July-December 1912 after Meiji's death, and Heisei from Jan 8 - December 31 1989. Emperor Taisho died about a week before the end of the year, so Showa's coinage just started at year 2.
Showa 64 coins were *supposedly* made for just one week, Jan 1-7 1989 before Showa died of cancer. They are scarce, but surprisingly not rare; maybe 1/10th of the average mintage from the rest of the 80s.

Honored to be the host once again! I considered a nice rare ancient coin, but I'll be nice... for now This one should be easy for a partial match but tough for an exact. Philippines Culion Leper Colony One Peso 1925 Mintage 20,000 This coin comes from the days when it was believed that lepers "contaminated" everything they touched, and needed to be quarantined and have their own money. Not actually true, so all of these coins were dumped on the collector market. Anywho: 6 points - Exact match 5 points - Any Leper Colony Peso from the US-Philippines 4 points - Any coin from the Culion Leper colony 3 points - Any Leper Colony coin from any country 2 points - Any Peso from the US-Philippines 1 point - Any US-Philippines or modern Philippine coin Let's see what the hive mind has

Quote: 2 points - Any Peso from the US-Philippines 1 point - Any US-Philippines or modern Philippine coin Does that mean that anything after 1945 is 1 point? I'm not gonna win, just curious as to what I will get the most points for (1 or 2).
