..and I wonder if Joseph knows how hard it is to photograph subtle toning.
Which is why I have to sit out this round.

Eight contestants so far.

Looking through the pictures I have, it seems I do not have many of toned coins. So you may very well be right. But you could, of course, just send all of those coins with subtle toning to me. That way I will be able to inspect them all in-hand.

For that 1979-S nickel, I figured out a little lighting trick using a small LED light with my phone camera and it brought out the colors fantastically. I don't know if it will work for more subtle toning, though.

Excellent entries all!

I am no pro by far at taking photo's of toned coins, but after many hours of trying and failing I have found it is easier to shoot em with the coin slightly tilted. I also tilt my camera to as close to the same angle as coin is. This allows you to shoot and angled coin straight on.

It also helps to move your lighting around once your coin and camera are in place. I use goose neck desk lamps on swivels for this reason. I move mine until the toning pops on my computer screen then I shoot pics. The only editing I do is a white balance check and cropping/combining.

Those are great shots! I'm gonna have to get some small goose neck LED lights and see what they can do with my setup.

Some tough competition this round, here's my offering. Nice golden toning, really makes the eagle stand out.

It is probably my favorite toned coin but my camera and lighting just do not reproduce the colors like the eye does.
I have the same issue with my 1902 Crown that I've used a couple times in this thread. It has a very attractive subtle toning on the reverse that just doesn't translate through the camera. Whispy, fire like toning in the fields by the horse's tail down along the bottom by the date and very subtle blue around the dragon's head.

Alrighy, this round is officially closed!

With nine entries total, anyone who posted a coin for this round will be able to vote for their favourite by PM'ing me their choice. You can vote for yourself if you want, but in the case of a tie, I will be the tie-breaker. Going with the first coins each person posted, here are the choices to choose from (in the order each coin was posted in):

1) MontCollector: a very colourful Canadian cent from 1957, displaying blues, yellows, and pinks.

2) Finn235: a chocolate brown Roman follis made from 317 to 318.

3) bd251: a Finnish penni from 1893 with a nice shade of purple showing all over.

4) spruett001: an American 5 cent piece from 1979 with deep streaks of purples and blues.

5) casualcoincollector: a California gold 1/2 dollar from 1854, showing different shades of reds, greens, and purples.

6) mysilveryears: an gold-toned American dollar from 1923.

7) Dorado: an Austrian 1/2 kreuzer from 1851—another chocolate brown coin!

8) Spence: a Lucanian (Lucani?) didrachm from 300 BC to 280 BC, with traces of blue poking out of the designs.

9) Coopertron5000: a German mark from 1914 with some nice golden fields.

May the most votes win!
