I had this in the book/supplies/programs section but there was no input, so I've reposted here

This is probably a stupid question but is there any differences between the 1st and 2nd edition? I may have the opportunity to purchase either one and I'd like to know if there is more info in 2nd than in 1st or any other differences.

Maybe Coppercoins could please give his input since he is the author

Also, when purchasing the " Cherry Pickers Guide" Vols 1 and 2, would it be best to get the latest editions because they include more info or better illustrations, or are they all the same?

1. My second edition explains grading somewhat better, has a 15 page section about the classes of hub doubling, and describes and illustrates non-collectible forms of doubling. It also has replacements for some two dozen photos that weren't as good int he first edition. I would recommend the second edition unless you're a numismatic book collector. In that case I would recommend the first edition if you can find one.

Second edition copies sold to date are nearing 4,000. There were a grand total of 1,200 first edition books and they have long since been completely sold out at most places. I believe Stantonbooks may have some left that I signed.

Rarest of all, as it were with my book, are the comb bound first editions. Four were made. One of them is my desk reference. I lost track of the other three, but they are out there somewhere.

Now to answer the CherryPickers' Guide question...

The newest editions are the best, with more complete listings and better photos. That having been said, if I were to go out as a noob and buy one, I'd probably buy the 4th edition vols. They are the last self-published by Stanton.

Coppercoins,
I agree that the Cherrypickers 4th edition vols are worth buying. I bought vol 2 and had some minor luck, but I have been having a tough time locating vol #1.
Any suggestions?

When I was in Texas on vacation, I went into two shops that had Vol 1s of the Cherrypickers Guides. I picked one up for only 16.95

That I am not certain of...might be better to find one elsewhere rather than wait on me to get more.

How are the other first editions bound?

All the others in the first edition were spiral bound - only the four were comb bound.

Reason being is that the books had to be sent off for 'continuous coil spiral' binding, and I was impatient to see one completed, so I took four of them to the local Staples store and had them bound right there on the spot. Those four are literally the first four off the press...and there are no others like them. Can't even be faked, because the coil holes are square, and the normally bound copies have round holes.

So it was a rarity created strictly out of impatience on the part of a first-time author.

My mother has one of them, I have another, and I cannot remember what happened to the other two. I may have sent them out to people who paid for the book and I didn't have any spiral copies at the time.

I like Vol 2.

The best book I have seen on Lincoln Cents I have seen and currently own is "The Authoritative Reference on Lincoln Cents" by John Wexler and Kevin Flynn. Unfortunately I believe this book is out of print. My copy is #22 signed first edition 1996.
