What part of Italy are you from, and where bouts do you live now? If I lived in Italy I would have a metal detector, even if I had to have it made custom in the soles of my shoes! Don't clean coins. Exception for ancients. Protect your coins, physically and environmentally. Collecting is instinctual, it arises from tens of thousands of years of being hunter/gatherers. What better to be instinctual with than money? There is a lot of information here, may you add to it. ETA: Aha, say hi to Florence for me.
