You need to know a little in how to grade the condition of a coin.
Google:
PCGS photograde
to get some ideas for comparison with your coin.

Also Google
NGC coin values
should with identification and valuation of modern coins.

If you are new, then investing in the 2018 guidelines of US coins (Called the Red Book) is a good place to start. You can get it digital or at a bookstore.
Next thing is look on auction sites, or even Amazon for similar coins to see what people are asking and/or paying.

If your coin is a U.S. coin then the Red Book is your best bet. Just note that those prices that they give aren't written in stone . Another words their an indicator of values on the high side of retail .
