I began collecting in junior high, and knew no one else who collected coins. At one point, I tried to sell my little sister on the magic of coin collecting, with very little success--the closest she got was saying that she wanted to "get one of them proof sets," but she never did.
But I've just come to realize that none of my friends in my entire life ever collected coins.
Maybe this is one of those situations where you join a coin club or attend a lot of shows and make coin collecting friends that way?
I'm curious, though, if anyone had/has a friend who also collected/collects coins who was originally not from "the business."

I don't recall ever meeting anyone who collected coins. Maybe they just didn't let it be known to me. I know of one person who did and that's where many of the coins I have came from. Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to meet him. Even though I've never met any of them in person, I think I've made some collector friends here. Don't tell me if it's a one-way friendship!

One of my cousins collected Morgans around 1980, give or take. I have no idea when/if he stopped -- we haven't spoken in decades. Aside from him, I can't say that anyone I know collects coins. They might, but it never came up in conversation (as the security of our collections often depends on "don't tell anyone"). A few of my friends took interest in my penny table, looking for/finding the Wheat cent and the Indian, but that's as far as it went.

Currently none. That is why I'm here. :) It is a solo hobby for me. I always see it as an old fashioned hobby. I guess I have an old soul. It's mostly older folks I see at the coin shows.

Serious collectors keep a low profile (maybe they don't want to get robbed) and aside from that I don't know anyone serious... one of the girls at work is collecting the Beatrix Potter 50pence pieces they have in circulation at the moment but I hardly think that qualifies.
Same with banknotes, with the release of polymer and the information spread around the internet everybody is looking at their money thinking they are going to get rich finding serial number AA01 00000001, that does't make them collectors.

One really good one whom I've known since my schooldays and with whom I often swap coins. Apart from him, I have another friend who gets The Royal Mint folders and collects all the commemorative 50p, one- and two-pound coins from circulation, but I don't think she really wants to move into other areas of numismatics!

Many that I have come to meet, when in the Coin World. In the real world, some relatives have accumulated coins. But are not active collectors. One good friends was getting back into collecting. He was killed while mowing his yard a couple years ago. Run over by a man on drugs. I miss him. It was fun helping him get back into collecting.

I know dozens of coin collecting acquaintances with whom I could spend hours with in discussions about coins. I have typically a few close friends, but none of them share my interest in coins. Lots of CCF members, with whom I can share my numismatic interests.

The only other collectors I know I have met in clubs/ shows/ forums. I do not talk about my collecting outside of these venues for security reasons.

None. And possibly if there are any people I know that collect coins, they really keep it a secret. Just to many robberies today to let anyone know what you have.
