Where is it available for purchase? If your gut tells you something might be off, something is off.

Your coin is a gold aureus of Domitian; worth a thousand bucks or two if genuine. Not surprisingly, they are also heavily faked.

thanks for your help, and off ebay it looks similar to genuine ones but the photos are not clear enough to make a good judgement, asked the sellers for additional pictures waiting for a reply.

Ancient gold coins (even the common ones) are so popular and valuable that people hand-strike fakes in period-correct metal using dies made from genuine coins, and still profit from it. It's scary, especially because coins bought from respected dealers and auction houses sometimes turn out to be fakes. With ebay, you have something like 90 days to prove it's fake, otherwise you're stuck with it. I would steer clear and not risk it. Rest assured, if you get this coin for less than $1,500, you are buying a fake.

Does the seller have an image of the reverse too? Check for "Domitian Aureus" here:

Look at the neck of the piece. I see what looks like the letters WRL stamped into it. That is a sure indication that the piece is a reproduction. The WRL stands for Westair Reproduction Limited.
