I found this in a lot with hundreds of coins. My first thought was- no way. Then I put it on my gram scale and it is spot on. So I took a closer look and there are some things that make me think yea and some things that say nay.
What say you?

Why would you automatically say "no way"? While it purports to be a strongly detailed pillar minor, that's not anything earth-shattering in terms of rarity or price..... And then, something as simple (and COMPLETELY non-definitive) as the weight being correct made you possibly think otherwise?

Anyway, regarding the coin...

I will note that a few years ago (5-10), there were a rash of fake Pillar 2R (some 1R and 1/2R also, but especially 2R) out of China. These typically present in the XF-AU range and are often pretty well-executed physically (and of course correct weight), but with some slight flaws. Quite a few I've seen have some pretty well-done artifical patination to help sell the job.

That said, for your piece... these years for Mexico often (across denoms.) display die rust, weakly-struck portions, and adjustment marks to some extent, so I don't find that shield-side bubbling to be a real problem. The piece has obviously been cleaned/dipped... which actually serves to show that there's (what look to be) remnants of fairly legit-looking muted luster around the protected areas.

To me, that's a genuine piece, XF+ cleaned.

It's cheating, but I'll ask - what else was in the group?

@Realeswatcher
Thank you for your comments.
As your name, and your detailed response suggest, you are far more knowledgeable than I in this matter. (quite possibly in other matters as well).
My initial reaction was based on circumstance and not believing in my good fortune. The reason I did an about-face after weighing it, I thought this to be a replica not a counterfeit. I assumed that a replica would make zero effort to match weight and composition. When the weight matched up- I realized that it was not a replica, now I began to wonder if it is genuine or a fake.
You say it is nothing earth-shattering in regard to price.
What would you value this coin at retail? Surely more than a few dollars...
Lastly, what else was in the lot?
I do not want to make ppl jealous, but holey moley. I bought a box without searching it. The seller is a guy I have a great relationship with, and I know he does not search the boxes, nor does he have a clue what is in them. I have made some AMAZING finds in his boxes in the past. (Only got burned once.) I paid $170 for the box. Some highlights
1889 Canada Quarter Key date 66K mintage F or better condition. Going on the Bay soon.
About $9 face value Canadian silver.
1882 H NFLD Half Dollar Also going on the Bay.
This 1750 which may be genuine....
Several silver world coins.
Hundreds of cents mixed Wheat and Indian. (including a 1864 bronze and other 1800's)
Lastly, hours of fun.
Rest in Peace

I don't see anything that alerts my fake alarms. Other than evil cleaning, not bad.

Buy an old pulp magazine, preferably from the 30's, and wrap this coin in a page for a couple months and you can Retone it without corrosion.

Some may call this artificial toning, but it actually improves the look of the coin without damaging it.

Yeah, moxking... it doesn't look absolutely egregiously hairlined. Once it regains some tone, it should look quite decent.

BigSilver, relating to what else was in there... clearly it wasn't total junk and there was "some stuff" mixed in there. Amazing what little regard some collectors and amazingly dealers STILL have for "foreign coins".

On the advice of my attorneys, I cannot comment on potential price. Gotta do your research :-> . Probably not terribly far that 1889 25c (though the market for Pillar minors can be a bit funny for raw and/or cleaned pieces).
