I found this penny in some random pocket change. Most of the interesting error coins I find are merely post mint damage. Is this the same? If it is, what could cause it?

Poor Abe was probably dropped in a Wallyword parking lot in 1986 and recovered rather recently in 2013 when it finally reentered circulation to wear off the rough edges of "road rash".

Strange but true...

Rest in Peace

I agree badly damaged and worth only a cent, but hopefully you'll find something more interesting with continued searching!

Unfortunately a bad case of "Road Rash". Heavy PMD making it worth one cent. But keep up the search because there are interesting coins waiting to be discovered.
