Its MD, no short explanation... The die presses went to the "single squeeze" method in the 1990's. What happens is when the die first hits the coin, if it's loose, it will shift slightly, making what's know as "the pop", a loud noise as it shifts into place. This causes a smearing effect as it settles into place. This noise alerts the techs that it's time for an adjustment!
