I purchased a setup from Ray for photographing small cents, which I am very happy with.

I want to start taking photos of larger coins, so I assume I should buy a tripod. Do you all have any recommendations re: what to look for?

For example, I found this one on Amazon:

Quote:
InnerTeck Mini Folding Camera Tripod with Ballhead for DSLR EOS Canon Nikon Sony Samsung - Travel Portable Tripod

The InnerTeck Mini Tripod is really suitable for macro photography. Of course you can shoot some macro without a tripod, but usually that doesn't turn out to well, since macro photography requires pinpoint focusing and rigid steadiness to avoid blur and maximize sharpness. And it is really frustrating when your subject is low to the ground and you want to shoot at ground level and you're ill-equipped. So if you need a good tripod for outdoor macro photography you will want one that works for all types of photography situations. With inverted function, the InnerTeck Mini Tripod can fulfill all your expectation and it is really the best choice for macro photography.

Thanks!

Mark...you can also just remove the stage plate from your existing stand, and put it on a couple of supports to raise it high enough for the working distance needed for larger coins. A couple of 2x4's on edge will get you 3-1/2", which may be enough to frame Dollars. You may be limited by the 63mm lens, though, and may need a 75-80mm. Were you planning to use a camera-mounted macro lens with the tripod or copy stand? You can probably get by much cheaper and with as good or better quality by making a few modifications to your existing system.

I never had great luck with tripods (on carpeting) and close-up imaging. It always seemed like there was too much vibration (even visible in Live View), so I switched over to a copy stand.

Back in the days of film, I did use tripods for coin imaging, but severe problems in focusing through the viewfinder with stopped-down macro lenses dwarfed any problems caused by the tripod.

Awesome! Thanks guys. I'm all for saving money so I'll give Ray's suggestions a go. And thanks pepactonius for the info on tripods--I can see them being more problematic.
