I recently purchased some old 1909 Russian Rubles from a seller on ebay. He sent me these 8 bills, and I would like to know some some ways to tell if the bills are faked or authentic. No certificate of authenticity was provided with the bills, he just claimed to have sold over 300 to people and that my bills in particular were from an auction.

I would say they're fake. Tthe serial numbers are the same. I had two older ones, rags condition wise but each had its own number. Those look too good, the paper looks modern and a lot stiffer.

BTW, to the forum! I'm no expert on foreign bills, bought a couple from auction on west coast a while back, fairly sure mine are real, really thin and fragile. Gave one away a while back, but yea #'s, were definitely different. Mine are 10 rouble and pink, otherwise the same style.

Yeah, that's what I figured. After I got them in the mail I had an overwhelming suspicion that they weren't genuine. Well, not much of a loss, really. Thank you for putting my worries to rest.

These notes are P-35 in the Russia section of the Standard Catalog of World Paper Money. I doubt they are copies. The numbers on these notes are not serial numbers, they are block numbers. You will find many notes with the same block numbers. YB-510 is the highest block number for these notes and this block number was issued by the Soviet government. They are common notes and catalog at $4.00 in UNC but are more like a dollar or two a piece.

There are similar notes that were an earlier issue (P-10 in the catalog) that have full serial numbers.

I agree with "Lettow" - your notes would appear to be genuine. They would have been issued by the Soviet Provisional Government most likely in 1917 and not 1909. These links will show similar 5 ruble notes and also the signatures of the Bank Director and Cashier. On you photos. the signature of Shipov can be clearly seen but not that of the Cashier.
