I visited my uncle about a month ago and he showed me some gold coins he had stored at the bank. They were all in various stages of BU condition. I didn't have a
Red Book with me, so I went to the PCGS website to get an idea of their values. Because I'm not expert grader, I gave most of them a grade of MS 60, just to be conservative.
What I found on the PCGS website were truly astounding prices! Witness:
1907-S $20 Lib Head c. $20,000
1881-S $5 Lib Head c. $250,000
1907 $10 Indian c. $50,000
1887-S $5 Lib Head c. $110,000
1912 $5 Indian c. $20,000
1908 $5 Indian c. $20,000
1913 $5 Indian c. $20,000
1924 $20 St. Gaud. c. $100,000
The only one that seemed "normal" was an 1885 $10 Lib Head, which was listed at c. $300.00. (Strangely enough, the current value is much more than that.)
I re-checked the numbers when I got home from my visit, and they are nowhere near what I had originally found (above).
My question is, how in the world did I come up with these values? Where would I have gotten them from? I know for sure I was on the PCGS website. But what I saw back then and what I see now are worlds apart. Thanks for your help!
