Back Again To ask for your wisdom and knowledge. I have tried finding this and the best I could come up with was a struck through struck fragment? or perhaps its just a double die with a lamination error? thoughts? opinions? On the back, there is a light indentation starting with the left part of the "T" in united, and covers most of the bottom left quarter of the coin, through the steps, and over to about the middle, ending in the "C" in Cent... ONE and C letters are clearly doubled...almost a full letter width away. such the the N & E is harder to see as they are under the letter before.... Thank you in advance for your help! If you need different or better pics, just let me know. Edited by marymanard 09/06/2017 03:25 am

John1, I know for sure this is a real Struck Through error. As a good guess, maybe Struck Through a detached Capped Die?

Good and smart thing to do John1. I will be watching and waiting to see what Mike thinks of this cool and rare error coin. :)

Two possibilities: 1) it was struck through a thin fragment of (presumably) metal that received a previous uniface strike; 2) it's an enormous multi-element dropped filling. I suspect the latter due to its soft and irregular margins. I've only seen two other large dropped fillings like this. They're quite rare and carry commensurate value.

Congratulations. On average such reports don't yield much, but you've really found a winner there.
I'd even go so far as recommending an NGC submission for that one!

wow. ok. cool. so... I've only ever found some neat personal collectible types... which has been fun...wouldn't mind getting some Christmas funds out of a penny.... I've never felt the need to grade anything, so I'm kinda clueless..... if you don't mind my asking... looking at the NGC fees... the $16 Modern up to $2K would sufficient / appropriate?

marymanard, You should put it in an Air-Tite ASAP and print out what Mike wrote so you can keep it together with the coin. If you get it slabbed, use PCGS. John1

Don't waste your money on encapsulating the coin. The grading services are hopeless when evaluating rare, unique, obscure, or subtle errors. The best you can hope for is a description like "struck through struck fragment", which hardly does it justice.

I suppose that's the way to go if you want to sell it. The last large, multi-element dropped filling that sold on ebay went for over $300.
