I assume this is a die issue seeing as how the obverse is only affected. It looks like it took a hit on the rim at the 5 o'clock position at some point, but the opposing side of the coin wasn't affected.

The coin weighs 5.5gms. Your thoughts appreciated.

Chase007, that was my first thought but the obverse is affected much more so than the reverse and that is what caused me to question it.

Acid with the obverse on top more exposed to the acid than the reverse on the bottom.
