It's a fake. Genuine Draped Bust don't show stars around the rim. Also in the future, PLEASE post photos right side up.

This is a bad fake The reverse design was not adopted until 1798 The coin was obviously struck with a collar, hence the raised rim. This wasn't implemented until the 1830's Also the design elements on both obverse and reverse are off in the details

Your counterfeit 1796 originated in China and is known as the "lightweight" counterfeit:

There are so many variations in these counterfeit early dollars- lots of different entities making them. I have a COPY stamped 1796. The extra large date on the OP's coin is what jumped out at me first. I think my counterfeit is a closer match to an original, even though it is still a dead giveaway to experienced collectors.

Darth, I don't suppose the off-centered variety of the 1796 when they were only made in 1795 is enough of a giveaway?

Quote: Darth, I don't suppose the off-centered variety of the 1796 when they were only made in 1795 is enough of a giveaway? Well, it wasn't to me because I was unaware of that fact. LOL. I don't study the early dollars in detail because I can't afford them. The counterfeit I posted is as close to owning one as I'll ever get. I'm OK with that, though. I just know enough to spot a counterfeit most of the time.

http://www.earlydollars.org/wizardhome.htmBookmark that place, and you won't have to study Early Dollars so diligently. The "usual" rules common to all counterfeits about surface quality and the like are still needed, but that's general stuff we should all be learning anyway.
