This is how to spot the 1st gen (1st issues from 1975, 1976, and part of 1977) King Kamehameha coins (aka medals) from The Hawaiian Mint (later renamed the Royal Hawaiian Mint (RHM)). I made this video a earlier this year.

Medcalf & Russell (book Hawaiian Money) calls it a blemish. RHM calls it a welt.

I have an interest in Hawaiian coins and tokens (see my avatar).

Where to look for these for sale? Or more history, mintages?

A not up to par listing of the The Hawaiian Mint/Royal Hawaiian Mint issues are cataloged in the book, Hawaiian Money Standard Catalog Second Edition, 1991, by Medcalf and Russell.

Issues of 1991 and later are not in this book.

A Royal Hawaiian Mint database (in Microsoft Excel spreadsheet) provides a more accurate catalog of the issues and mintage. This database was named Waifs in Gold Boots (aka WIGB) and covers the years 1974 through 2010. The database was public domain and available for years. It was taken down several years ago, but there are ways to obtain a copy.

Google The Hawaiiana Numismatist (about tab) for other Hawaiian reference books/websites.

The Hawaiian Mint/Royal Hawaiian Mint issues can be bought on ebay, but the sellers do not accurately describe these issues due to the lack of proper listing in the 1991 Medcalf & Russel book and the lack of knowledge of the WIGB existence. You can be taken to the cleaners with these inaccurate ebay listings.

Here is an example of WIGB being used...
