Is This Unusual For A 1989-D Nickel?

Mikemcdannel New Member United States 4 Posts	Posted 09/14/2017 11:48 am This nickel has no scratches or marks that show someone took it off doesn't look rubbed off yet instead of the date being 1989 it says 198°lol thoughts or is this normal? Report this Post to the Staff

coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 09/14/2017 11:52 am Just a damaged circulated coin from what I can see. Part of the digit may have some blockage of grease. coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 09/14/2017 12:07 pm The area is not damage. The die in incuse (sunk in) to form a raised area on the coin. When grease fills in this area, it prevents the coin to strike up on that area. It can be one device/several or part of a device that couple be affected. Just that area of the die had some grease on that area. (dies are a negative of a coin) thus a blocked/filled area on the die prevents that area from forming. Report this Post to the Staff
