US Mint - Sales to Authorized Purchasers begin September 25

WASHINGTON - The United States Mint today announced it will begin for the first time sales of a one-ounce American Eagle Palladium Bullion Coin to Authorized Purchasers on September 25.

United-States-Mint-Launches-New-Palladium-Bullion-Coin-Program

As with American Eagle Gold and Silver Bullion Coins, American Eagle Palladium Bullion Coins will be made available through the United States Mint's Authorized Purchaser network. Authorized Purchasers consist of major coin and precious metals wholesalers, brokerage firms, banks, and other participating financial intermediaries.

American Eagle Palladium Bullion Coins will be made available to United States Mint Authorized Purchasers at a 6.25 percent premium over the prevailing price of palladium.

Public Law 111-303 requires the Secretary of the Treasury to mint and issue palladium bullion coins weighing one troy ounce of .9995 fine palladium, with a face value of $25.00, in such quantities as the Secretary determines appropriate to meet demand. Only coins in the one-troy ounce size are permitted; fractional sizes are not authorized.

Title 31 U.S.C. Section 5112(v) authorizes the Secretary to mint and issue proof and uncirculated versions of the one-ounce palladium bullion coins.

As mandated by the law, the obverse design of the palladium coin is an adaptation of Adolph A. Weinman's 'Winged Liberty' design used on the obverse of the so-called 'Mercury dime,' and the reverse design is based upon Weinman's Eagle design for the 1907 American Institute of Architects (AIA) gold medal. In developing the coin, the United States Mint was able to utilize the original reverse plaster of the AIA gold medal. This is the first time that Weinman's AIA design appears on a U.S. coin.

Thanks for sharing. I actually like this coin. Too bad they don't sell direct to customers.

I'd love to get one - it actually looks pretty for once - but I have no chance of being able to afford the full ounce unless I win the lottery, and they apparently don't intend to provide fractional sizes anytime soon (and I highly suspect that by the time they do make any - if they ever do at all - the design will be different).
Rest in Peace

I love everything about this coin, except for the price. I wonder how much over the 6.5% dealers will be charging.

But for that price I can get some awesome classics.

There are a couple of dealers on ebay already. One is asking about $1500, the other wants about $1085 (but that one has a feedback history of canceling orders and raising prices). For future reference, the current market "ask" is $914, and a 6.5% markup would be just under $975.

IIRC, a proof version for collectors will be available directly from the US Mint in 2018.

I wonder the same - based on the markup on platinum Eagles, I would suggest that retail pricing will be in the 12-15% range over spot (for small quantity purchases).

APMEX has them on pre-sale for approx. $1047 (wire/check) so that is approx. 14.7% over spot, like commems mentioned. 6.5% is the mint to dealer premium, so if you take that out the dealer premium around 8%.

Would be nice, but like the gold and platinum issues, it falls outside of my normal collecting budget.
