I won this off ebay. It looks to be XF maybe even AU, but upon further inspection in hand it make me wonder if it has been cleaned at some point. I can't tell if the scratches in the fields are from light circulation or from being wiped.

Here is another shot of it in lower light to show detail.

So hit me with it. In your opinion has this been cleaned?

Thanks again...Mont.

My hunch is this has been cleaned in the past. Looking at the photos again I can see the tell tale halos, especially on the reverse. Could be the lighting though.

At first glance I would have said cleaned/detailed. Why? I don't know. Some type of stain on the reverse plus your hairline scratches. I could also see it in a slab with a cleaned/detailed designator.

IMO, the coin has been abrasively cleaned at some point. The parallel/near parallel lines seen on both sides are an indication of the coin being wiped.

Grr. This gets my goat. What did I miss in these listing that I bought such a badly cleaned coin? I have NEVER returned a coin, but am seriously considering returning this one. I waited a long time to get on that looked good.

Can you tell this is a cleaned coin in this listing?

Yes it is the same coin. The marks on the neck are there as well as the clash on the reverse.

Pictures are deceptive. A good indicator for me would have been his negative feedback.

I know I didn't look at that until too late.

I know. I might do that. It wold be the first time I ever returned a coin if I did.

Luckily I have a rule to spend $20 or less on coins the first time I buy from someone off ebay. Unless that ebay member is also a trusted CCF member that is.

Well, it was only $13.83 Be happy it wasn't a several hundred dollar coin.

At that price point, wouldn't you really rather have something like this?

I think the OP is trying to stay away from cleaned.

In that case, buying raw is almost certain to end up being cleaned. These coins are not all that expensive even certified Unc. For instance.

I get that logic for raw, I would just mention though that you may be cornering yourself into a greater chance of problem coins by ignoring higher priced graded ones from other sellers

No question this has been cleaned, and a bad buy even at this price. Will you enjoy looking at a scrubbed example of the cheapest US classic commemorative? What's your upside?
