Quote: No question this has been cleaned, and a bad buy even at this price. It's an inexpensive learning experience. Sometimes a Seller will give you a partial refund to avoid the hassle of returning the coin, just ask. Columbians are a very reasonable starting point for a classic commemorative collection, hopefully the OP will locate one he will enjoy. I started out with a Columbian and a Monroe back in the 1970s and I don't think they cost anymore (probably less) today than they did back then.

Around here these are $30 and up in even worse condition. I have seen them sell for less and some for even more on ebay. This wasn't a buy it now. I figured, the way the sellers photos made the coin look, if it was under $15 it was a decent buy. If I don't return it it will go in my junk pile and call it lesson learned. At least this way no-one else will fall for those photos of this coin. I tend to look for raw coins over graded ones for storage reasons. But maybe this is one coin I should buy graded. I don't plan to start a Commemorative half collection. This is just one coin I really like the looks of.

Keep an eye on Allegiance Rare Coins Mont, he should have a nice raw one listed soon.

Honestly for $14 shipped I'd probably buy it even knowing what it looks like now, it would be a complete impulse purchase with no prior research if I can find one in similar condition for a better price, but it's a nice piece of history to have. I'd keep it as a pocket piece, I like to be able to touch and handle coins without worrying about their value being affected.
That's like $11 if you factor in the shipping costs, if you dont, you lose a maximum of $9 if you just get rid of it as junk silver today

Concur with all the comments already given on 'cleaned state' of this coin - but that is not the purpose of this reply.
Suggest to MontCollector that your personal collecting interest outweighs any of our opinions on the coins you select.
Your Columbian half is cleaned - enjoy it for what it is - a lovely artifact surviving member of our USA initial commemorative issue.

No argument here - if you like it, that's the only thing that matters.

I agree that would be a great pocket piece. Carry it around for a year, and you might have a nice circulated piece worth what you paid.
