Last night I won this solidus of Heraclius. Since I began collecting a few Byzantine gold coins, I have been interested in these small solidii of Carthage. This one has issue with one of the portraits but is still in very nice condition imho. I also got it for what I think was an excellent price.

Please post your solidii or any coins of Heraclius.

Heraclius (AD 610-641) & Heraclius Constantine (AD 613-641). AV solidus (4.46 gm). XF. Carthage, Indictional Year 9, 1st cycle (AD 620/1). D N #1028;RACLIO #1028;T #1028;RACOS P P Theta;, facing busts of Heraclius, with short beard (on left) and Heraclius Constantine, smaller and beardless (on right), each wearing chlamys and crown, cross in field above / VICTORI-A AVGG Theta;, cross potent on three steps; CONOB in exergue. Sear 867.

Kinda rough dies on that one. But ancient gold is always cool.

Nice pickup, Andrew. A worthy addition to your solidi. You've got quite the collection of Byzantine AV's at this point (as well as the oddball Valens AV).

Btw, I've got your blog bookmarked. Great job on it! Will the gold issues be posted there at some point too?

Thanks Bob, for the comments on the coin and the blog. I thought about posting a link to my blog here but I did not know if it was allowed. I will post the gold issues eventually. I am just waiting for a block of time so that I can reshoot the photos. As for the "oddball" Valens, I am looking for a decent example of his brother in gold.

I wish I could afford more of these, but here is my only solidus of Heraclius (with Heraclius Constantine as Augustus). It is attributed as Sear 738 and was minted between 616 and 625 AD.
