Yes Doctor - it's nickel plated. Nickel is magnetic.

Mercury isn't magnetic

And yes - Nickel is magnetic. The reason US nickles don't stick to a magnet is that it is a 75% copper - 25% nickel alloy. On the other hand, Canadian 100% nickel coins are very magnetic.

There are multiple ways to turn a copper penny into a silver color. One of those is with Mercury and one of those is with Nickel-plating. If you didn't specify that your coin was attracted to a magnet, then this could be a pretty reasonable mistake to make.
