Just bought this on ebay, but don't know much about it. Could someone possibly tell me something about it. What denomination is it, and what is the translation on the obverse and reverse. I'd be willing to do the research if pointed in the right direction. Is there a source online to attribute the variety? Hope this is the right forum. PCGS has these listed in the Colonial section. Any comments are apprectiated. Thanks, Ed http://www.ebay.com/itm/1755-A-SOU-...p=true&rt=nc

1755 A Sou Marque of Louis XV. A = Paris mint. The varieties were definitively catalogued by Bob Vlack; this is probably Vlack 361.
The coin is actually billon, which is an alloy of silver and copper, originally at a 1:4 ratio; throughout the run of these coins, the silver content was debased, until by the end of its run in the 1760s it was little more than a silver-plated coin of high copper content.
The denomination is one sou marque, also known as a sol double/double sou or 1/10th livre tournois d'argent. It was valued at 24 deniers, nominally, but in reality the precious metal content was worth much less. Une livre tournois was equal to 20 sols/sous, or 240 deniers. There were 6 livres to equal 1 (silver) ecu at the time this coin was made.
nb: "Sou" is the later version of the term "sol" which became common after the late 17th c., itself derived from the Roman solidus and denarius (sols et deniers.)
The obverse inscription is Latin for "Louis XV, by the Grace of God, King of France and Navarre."
The reverse inscription is Latin, "SIT NOMEN DOMINI BENEDICTVM", which means "Blessed be the name of the Lord"
These coins circulated in New France and the New England colonies through the mid 18th c.

Thanks for the replies. I'll be looking at the NGC and RedBook. @paralyse, can't thank you enough for the pinpoint info, that would have taken me hours to come up with. Where can I get the Vlack info on the varieties? Won the coin by .77 with a last second bid, and less than $80 shipped with 8% ebay bucks was a really good price imo. I've never seen one come up before, and even though the audience is probably small, I was instantly infatuated, and it looked like possibly really good buy. There is still some of the billion silver wash present. Thanks Again, Ed

Congrats. Heritage shows only two sales of one (the same) coin like yours in its records. The first time it sold for $260 in 2000, and resold for $184 in 2001. That coin does not match your serial number. https://coins.ha.com/c/search-resul...veTab-071515

The full title is "Illustrated Catalogue of the French Billon Coinage in the Americas" - Robert A. Vlack, 2004. It is out of print and Mr. Vlack passed on, sadly, in August of 2015. An excellent signed copy is currently available on ebay: 122704584852This is a really good price and I would buy it if I could afford it at the moment.

Yes, thanks again. I did see the listing for Mr. Vlack's book on ebay. It looks like a beauty.

Oh my. That price seems really cheap to me. I've dabbled into French colony colonials. I paid $150 for this 1767 earlier this year. I think you did really well on it. Perhaps a steal!?

The price Ed won his for is outstanding -- his coin was part of a batch sold at Heritage, by the way, some point in the past.
