RESULTSI used a point system for determining the winner that I tested against other methods and think is fair. For figuring points I compared 1:1 guesses to answers like this: Oldest guess to oldest coin 2nd oldest guess to 2nd oldest coin 3rd oldest guess to 3rd oldest coin Etc... On top of that, any exact guess(es) got a bonus regardless of chronological order: The PointsWithin 5 years (10 year span) - 10 points Within 10 years (20 year span) - 7 points Within 20 years (40 year span) - 3 points Any exact guess (whatever order) - 15 pointsThe AnswersThe oldest coins with identifiable dates were: 1853 1859 1870 1886 1888Rankings1. january1may - 48 WINNER!2. Buckwill311 - 43 3. Joseph7420 - 33 4. Coopertron5000 - 30 4. OttawaVoyageur - 30 6. WheatBackPenny - 26 7. Parklane64 - 25 8. Earle42 - 22 9. MontCollector - 19 10. Crazyb0 - 15 11. A BIG thank you to everyone who participated in Phase 1. Hopefully we can get some more contestants for the next two. Phase 2 will begin Sunday evening.

@Buckwill I'll use your guesses (in chronological order) as an example: 1870 1880 1886 1892 1919 Answers: 1853 1859 1870 1886 1888 So: Coin 1: 17 years off - 3 pts Coin 2: 21 years off - 0 pts Coin 3: 16 years off - 3 pts Coin 4: 6 years off - 7 pts Coin 5: 31 years off - 0 pts Exact matches regardless of order: 2 (1870,1886) - 30 points That means your total points were: 43 ...And I screwed it up! I admit I tried to get the results posted as quickly as possible and guesses not posted in chronological order gave me more trouble. I'll double check all the results later (no time now) and post any revisions/place changes. Sorry. I chose a point system over total average years off to avoid a bunch of high numbers with decimal places and I couldn't figure how to fairly give a bonus for exact guesses.

Okay, after double-checking the scores, the only changes are Buckwill's score and Joseph7420 also moves up into 3rd and out of the three way tie. The results above have been changed to reflect the corrections. Sorry about having to award no points to several players. I could have included a point for within 30 years but, a 60-year span when trying to get closest is a little out there. Plus, it wouldn't have changed the winner. Quote: would you mind sharing with us what the five coins were? I do mind. The next two phases will complete the identification of the coins. Everyone (with 50 posts) except january1may is eligible to participate in the next Phase!

Phase 2Restated for clarity of the general idea/rules:Some may have seen the topics I created about my first bulk world coin purchase. I got 5 lbs of coins which included 475 total coins from over 70 different countries. What I have done for this contest is pick out the 5 oldest coins with identifiable dates that were included. What the contestants will do is gradually identify these coins through Three Phases. There will be no pictures posted until the contest is over. Each Phase will have a winner! General Rules You must have 50 posts to play. If you reach 50 posts during the contest, you can then participate in what is left. Open to members from all countries. One guess per member, per Phase. Each Phase will last 5 days and begin when I post and end at Midnight ET (forum time) after 5 full days have passed. Phase ties of any sort will be addressed if/when they occur. Being fair is high priority! These are all non-U.S. coins! The Phase 1 winner (january1may) is not eligible for the next Phases. The Prizes Each Phase Winner will receive a silver quarter! They will also receive extra goodies I include to try and make the prize lots even. So...it will basically be a surprise. You may be now wondering... Phase 2 ChallengeYour quest is to guess the country of each of the 5 oldest coins. The order doesn't matter. No two are from the same country. All five countries must be included in one post and editing is not allowed without a valid reason (typo, missing coin guess, etc.). Please be honest. Hints: Think about what I may reasonably find in a world coin bin at an LCS in the U.S.The coin dates have now been revealed:1853 1859 1870 1886 1888There are countries that did not exist then.Phase 2 guessing ends Midnight ET September 30th, 2017.That's a lot to read again but, it's all important. Anyway, let's get Phase 2 started! So, Guess the countries!
