I haven't ever had the chance to go on one of the Mint Tours before but I am planning to this summer. I know you can buy products from the gift shop, but can you only buy coins that are from what ever mint your at? I am going to the Denver mint, so can I only get Denver mint coins or can I get Philly mint coins too? I want the Dollar coins which I can get the Denver mint from the bank I work at, but I cant get the Philly ones that way. Can I get them from the gift shop at the Denver mint?

I have been to the shop at the Denver Mint. They carry everything that is in the online catalog. There was also a guy with a pushcart just outside of the fence on the sidewalk selling some vintage coins as well. Mainly inexpensive stuff(under $30) but things like off-center cents, circulated Morgans, noncurrent proof sets, $1 face bags of Wheats, etc. I imagine that he didn't worry too much about getting robbed since there were several US Mint Police officers about twenty feet away and cameras everywhere

...........

Of all the times I've been to Colorado on trips.......not ONCE did it occur to me to visit the Denver Mint !!....and I was just there last Labor day for over a week !......(well there and South Dakota, Wyoming too)
Gotta remember that next time !.........how common is it for the "push cart" guy to be there ?...Is he a regular ?

Well, I can only tell you this much- my wife and I were in Colorado for our honeymoon three years ago. We tried to get a Mint tour but that whole process was completely messed up after 9/11(no tours were given at all for a year or two) so it did not happen. The gift shop was in a construction trailer type setup just inside the fence and was open to the general public. The guy with the cart o' numismatic fun was just outside the gate. Judging by the amount of work he put into building the cart and the fact that he possessed a street vendor license from the city, I would assume he parks there every day the weather is nice. The front of the Mint is on Colfax but the tour/shop entrance is on the side on Cherokee facing the city/county building

The tour process is much simpler now as online reservations can be made http://www.usmint.gov/mint_tours/

BTW eaglefoot,
If you are ever a bit further south on I-25 in Colorado Springs, you must go to the ANA Museum

Regular numismatists would probably best to avoid the Denver push cart guy. He's selling stuff that appeal to people who have very little coin collecting knowledge. His prices are high retail and the pieces are simple widgets.

I visit the Denver shop once a year and buy the Silver Proof set. In the past, they've let me preview a number of sets before settling on one. They've cut back on that ability which sucks. However, I'll just have to tell them they will have to deal with me sitting there, opening up my purchased set and asking for an exchange until I get one I like.

The person behind the counter may be giving you the "furrowed brow" look as you keep exchanging them !..........but hey...it's your right to do that as each one can be "subpar" !

My dad grew up in Manitou Springs so I know that area very well from having visited my grandparents many times as a kid in the 70s and 80s. Seven Falls is even better at night when the falls are lit up. Of course, just on the other side of Pike's Peak, is one of the greatest gold regions in the world- the Cripple Creek-Victor District. The highlights of the ANA Museum are the Bass Collection(highlights are a complete $3 set and $4 Stella set along with many other gold coins and patterns), the $100,000 bills in the library, a 1913 Liberty Nickel(two were displayed when I was there), and an 1804 dollar.
