Hey guys - I think the observe says AVG or AVC and I am having a hard time making out the symbols on the back. Does anyone know who this is, when it was minted, where? Thanks :)   |

Wow, Thanks! This is my first Augustus :) The coin was really thick (like a greek coin) so I was kind of confused there. I really appreciate your help @Finn235

I just read about Augustus (Octavian). I didn't know he was Julius Caesar's nephew, so cool!

Excellent way to start your collection by adding a nice little Augustus.
The provincial and colonial issues from Spain can be quite affordable for the beginner. Nice Imperial coins (Rome and Lyon) of early emperors have become quite expensive.
But decent portrait coins of Augustus and Tiberius can be found from Spain. Even Caligula is not too pricey.
Unfortunately Claudius shut down all the local Iberian mints and replaced the Spanish coinage with Imperial issues. They retain a distinctive style but lose the great variety.
You must try now for a Tiberius !

Fun fact: as far as I can tell, my collection only includes portrait issues of two 1st century Roman emperors.
Said two emperors? Caligula and Claudius.
(I keep putting back my planned thread about the Caligula type... I even came up with the title: "I had zero coins of Caligula, I bought one, now I have two".
I think my Claudius is supposed to be a Spanish mint, by the way.)

The bust style usually will indicate the mint of origin.
A "normal" well centered bust being from Rome
A small ball at the bottom tip indicating Lyon
The bottom tip of the bust running off the field being a Spanish type
