Hi Folks, What are your thoughts on the grade of this Hawaii Dollar?     The coin has appropriate weight and size and is really quite pleasant in real life. The coin has some decent luster on both, the obverse and reverse (especially reverse). In picture 1 luster can be seen on the 'k' and 'o' as well as on the hair (sorry hard to capture in pics) and the reverse in picture 2 on the 1 and the last 'A' in 'AINA as well in the upper right section of the mantle. My concern are the dinks around the beard area without which I am certain the coin should grade at least in the mid to high AU range. In your opinion, would this be sufficient to not give this coin a grade?

I like it at au58. There are many hits in the fields, but they are small. The hits are heavy in the cheek and beard, but fortunately for you, they are hidden well by the beard. They look like hits from other coins or "bag marks." The coin is beautiful and I don't see a lot of wear. Wear determined circulated grade, not bag marks and hits, so I am comfortable at au55-58. The coin shows as beautifully as you describe. Pretty hints of color. Congrats!

I am concerned as to OP is, regarding those marks on the cheek.
The second pair of pictures show wear on the obverse, (on the high points of the hair, beard and mustache), which is not quite as obvious on the first pair of pictures.
Disregarding the marks on the cheek, high AU with the first set of pictures, low AU with the second set of pictures.
Due to their fame, these coins are quite often faked. I do not know enough about this type to pass a well regarded opinion in this case. However, with my meager experience with these, I would regard this coin as genuine.

Genuine. AU, details, damaged, cleaned. The nearly intentional railroad tracks on the upper cheek would detail this, more than likely. The cleaning isn't so dire, as anyone hunting one of these will hit 12-15 cleaned before an uncleaned example shows up, including TPG s. Note my own coin to left which is one of these that I liked after searching for a decade. If you can get this for less than $400 it's a reasonable buy. Below $300 would be a steal.

Interesting. There are no hairlines on the coin (I already have purchased it) so if it was cleaned it was a while ago and it was done well, probably by soap water/quick dip or something of the sort. Mox; I can't tell the details on your coin, care to post a pic? As for pricing, I think prices have changed a bit since you last shopped around  . How long ago did you get yours? I have it around AU53-55 on technical merit, and the surfaces are debatable regarding market acceptability. My thought is, it would probably receive a Details grade, but in the market it would trade at the very upper end of "Details" pricing in grade. $500 probably shouldn't do it.
