I'll step in to fill Nate/A-Noob's shoes since he has been AWOL for over a year. This is one of the last items missing from my set of Indian silver drachms of the indo Greek standard.

Central India, Satavahana Empire
Yajna Sri Satakarni
C. 152-201 AD
Bust of Yajna Satakarni right, wearing elaborate earrings, hair bun atop forehead, Brahmi legend around
6-arched hill, Ujjain symbol, river, Tamil Brahmi legend around.

Milestone!-Rare-Drachm-Of-Satavahana-Empire---Yajna-Satakarni

Yajna was the last great king of the Satavahana empire, ruling just a few decades before its dissolution. Historical records tell us that he ruled 29 years, but provide no dates in a calendar system. He dealt a blow to the Western Satraps and regained some territory lost about a decade earlier under Vashishtiputra Satakarni to Rudradaman I. After Yajna, the Satavahanas went into decline and were gone by 225.

Satavahana drachms were derived from Western Satrap drachms, which in turn were ultimately derived from Indo-Greek coinage after the abandonment of the Attic standard about three centuries earlier. Their drachms are all rare, and most seem to have been holed for suspension in a necklace. I sadly did not win the seller's other Satavahana drachm, which was overstruck on a Nahapana coin.

Wow! what an excellent find. This type does not show up for sale very often. I would love to add one of these to my collection. Congrats Steve.

Thanks!

I am still curious to know where Nate got so many of these - IIRC he had 5 or 6, all in pretty high grade. I'd love to have a complete set (I think there are only 4 or 5 total to collect) but this was the only one I've seen within grasp and for less than $250.

I did spot one very nice example in a Todywalla auction a couple weeks ago, but they won't ship ancient coins out of India unless the buyer jumps through some serious hoops with the Indian government.

Nate is no longer collecting coins at the moment. I haven't spoken to him in a month or so, I know he had a source in India. I'll ask him the next time we talk.
