Just checking for conformation or not. Not much left bet a lot of wear damage but does have the basic shape and size.

Second 6 certainly isn't anything like the first 6. From what I can see I believe it is a RPD of some variety.

*All* 1866 appear to have the second 6 slightly larger than the first. This is not an RPD.

Thanks for responding Itchy, you seem to be the Shield nickel guy. Ever sinc that go-around with BCG months ago, been getting more into them, but don't seem to find a lot of , ah, free resources on line to help determine these varieties. My budget is tight, so cant afford those $100 books!

Yea, thought that might be the case since the RPD seems to show the two different sizes in it. Just a normal date punch. If it weren't for no luck, wouldn't have any at all!

@Crazyb0: For cases like this one, the Heritage auction archives are very useful. For example, you could browse a number of sold 1866 Shield nickels to see if their dates look similar to yours.

PCGS coin facts also has some useful info. This page shows you a typical 1866:

Note that the sixes on all three examples pictured look like your coin.

If you have Shield nickel questions, I'm always happy to help.
