Hello, This is my first post. I've got a bunch of old coins that I inherited. This one looks to be in good condition. I'm just wondering about how this happened, and of course, what it might be worth? Also, are error coins that common? Thanks. Bill

If the pic is accurate, that's close to a 90° rotation. Simply, it happens when one of the dies (or both) striking the coin is rotated out of its proper position. The more extreme the rotation, the more value. It's tough to tell the overall condition of the coin from the pic (too small and grainy). There would definitely be a premium value for this one. How much? It depends on the condition. Pretty cool! Oh, and... to CCF!

Thanks, I haven't quite figured out your rules and process for posting pics. I hope that this will be better. Btw, the line that runs across her headband and feathers ending on the A, isn't on the coin. I'll do a better scan tomorrow.

Thanks for the extra pic! I still can't gauge condition very well but now, I see that it is a rotation more in the 120° range. Even better! The line on the 2x2 and staple positions help. Let's see what others say. As far as uploading pics, see Tutorials.

Thanks spruett, I missed a couple of things when I read the tutorial last night. It was late. I sized these down to 800x800. Please let me know if the pics are better. I used photoshop for the cropping, sharpening, and resizing.

The trick is finding a buyer for the rotation error. They exist, but there are not as many as you might think. Most error collectors have their own finds, and don't purchase quite as often.

If you're looking to sell, it will take patience to get the best price awaiting the right buyer to come along. I did see some of these (with less significant rotations) that sold for over $20 on ebay. Some sold for quite a bit more (over $100) but they were in better condition and also graded/slabbed. If you are using a scanner to take these, you probably won't be able to do any better. You'll need to use a camera to get it more clear. Regardless, it's obviously circulated and it looks like a ding in front of Liberty's chin. It might be in VG area at best.
