Over the years found on fields and ackers in the middle en the north of the Netherlands. These are the top coins I've found with the metal detector

Looks like the holes got covered up with some kind of ugly paste?

The "holes" was a tear at the edge of the coin. It was repeared by heating this part of the coin a bit. The "ugly paste" is in fact the original silver

Ahh ok.....Never seen this before...interesting..

Is this process commonly used to repair medieval coins?
Its not my collecting area but I know they can sometimes be quite thin and fragile..

I assume in time these areas should tone back into the rest of the coin then?

It's the less interfering repair process in restoration (according to the restoration bureau). You don't add something, but use the materials already available. If you take a closer look on the first photo's, one can see the S is already a bit damaged. These photo's are just a bit more sharp.
