Hello all. I'm new here and I'm hoping you can help me out. I strongly suspect these 3 coins are fake, but I don't know much about them. Can you please let me know what you think? Thank you so much!

The 1796 sounds like silver. The 1802 and the 1790 sound like nothing I've heard before.

All of them look good to me, or at least nothing obviously looks wrong. A lot of interesting chop marks on the 1790 and 1796! Do they have the correct weight/ pass the magnet test?

I don't know if they're fake. You need to give us the weight and sizes as well, I guess, and an indication on whether they're magnetic or not. They look worn, and someone had fun with counterstamping them, but there's no obvious red flags for me yet.

The marks look like Chinese chopmarks. It was very common at the time and they make the pieces very interesting from an historical perspective.

Thank you all for the responses. The coins all weight around 26.2g. The 1802 and the 1796 are the same width (~40mm depending on where measured), but the 1796 is a couple mm smaller in diameter (~38mm).

There are a couple things that are concerning me. On the reverse of the 1802 the top of the shield is not flat. It is kind of wavy. The details in general on all the coins aren't that crisp, but they are pretty worn and I'm not sure if that is just the general case with coins from this period. Thank you again for the help.

Also the coins are not magnetic.

The pictures are not very clear but I see nothing that condemns the coins.

The Mexico City coin is one I would look most closely at, but given the post strike damage it is more than likely genuine.

I would add a measurement of specific gravity to the test list that has been suggested. SG is hard to fake.

I would also check the edge on the Mo (the others look too worn to check) for overlaps and other typical errors seen on counterfeits.

Ring can be misleading at times and it takes some amount of skill to do correctly.

Thank you swamperbob. I tried to post better pictures but they were just too large.

Fake8Reales If you wish you can mail the pictures to my business address. Go to the Amazon.com web site and search for "Counterfeit Portrait Eight-Reales" what comes up is the Amazon add for my book. Amazon shows some of the inside pages - click on the picture of the book and advance to page 2 the copyright page and you can get the snail mail address for my business. We can communicate that way if you wish - or in any other fashion you choose.

In the revised edition and in my second book I plan to put in my email address as well.

Wow thank you, swamperbob. I've heard you are an awesome guy but I had no idea. How much is autographed copy of your book? If I end up keeping at these 8 reales your book looks like a must have.

I have a few copies (softcover) remaining. I will sell them for $35 postpaid. They all have minor defects (they were on the outside of the original shipment boxes) nothing really bad just not absolutely perfect. No tears just bends. I do not plan to purchase any others because the 500 copy limit is approaching. At the present rate of sales it will occur in about 12 months. After it hits that point, I will prepare a revised edition with more examples.
