This is getting fun the more I learn! OK, story... Bought 5,000 pennies from APMEX on ebay. Adsays 1090-1958 wheat pennies. Went through about 700 of them and they were all 40's and 50's. So, I filed a refund claim. Then I decided for my time, I will pull out all the clean ones. Was about 50, maybe. Well, I decided not to return the bag. For $200.00 I figured, they could not have caught all the errors, and for 4 cents each, I will keep them. This is the third coin I put on my microscope! Any ideas. It has the worn die edges like the Susan B I posted, but not as bad. It has this weird raised edge like half a hat on old Abe's head. Is a die chip?

Looks like a struck through piece of foil, that or superglue letting color thru. $200 for 5k? Shoulda bought mine when I had em, guaranteed mix of at least 19.5% 10's-30's...too late now, was selling for $220. Give you a hint, anything for that amount that price will be the dealer dumps, bought at road shows in motels. PM and I can tell you a place to get some for a reasonable fee if errors are what you want. I stopped buying mega bulk after 33,000. Once you get these darn things, ya can't hardly give 'em away!

It's a retained interior die break (RIDB). Specifically, it is the RIDB-1c-1957D-01:

aka cracked skull. 4 cents each for 1940's and 1950's are on the high end. If you went to a dealer and tried to sell then, you would get 2-3 cents each. So the spread is minimal.

Considering about 90% of all the wheat cents were struck in the 40's and 50's, a random selection of 5000 wheat cents should contain about 4500 pieces from the 40's and 50's.

The reviews on their website for this product are terrible. Everyone says that they received only like, 2 pre-forties. But I suppose there is the opportunity to find errors, which you pointed out.

Also, Crazybo, 4 cents per each doesn't necessarily mean that. I bought some wheat cents for that price at a dealer and about 30-45% were pre-1940.
