I collect foreign currency and recently purchased a bag of Australian and New Zealand large cents in a large lot of coins. I've been considering starting a date set, but I wanted to learn more about each series. What are the key dates to both sets, and where can I find the mint marks (if they exist for that year)?
Here's what I recently acquired. Australian pennies are F-VF probably, and NZ pennies are XF-AU.
Australia 1911, 1912, 1915, 1920, 1921, 1923, 1924, 1938, 1941, 1943, 1944, 1945
New Zealand 1940, 1941, 1942, 1943, 1947
Forgive me if the New Zealand pennies shouldn't be here, but I was hoping the Aussie collectors would be more knowledgeable than I am. Thanks for any help you may provide as I am new to Australian coins! Edited by twinkinator 10/11/2017 1:40 pm

The key dates for Oz Pennies are very simple,1930 A$10-20,000,1925 A$100 and 1946 A$50,these are approx values for average egs. There is plenty of Info. on the net. There are also several varieties that are worth a premium,1920 English Obverse and 1931 Indian Obverse for eg. http://www.triton.vg/pennies.html

Wow, that 1930 is quite expensive! I don't think I'll be purchasing one of those any time soon... I took a look at the website, and it's quite helpful! Thanks, Basil. From some quick research, it appears that 1941, 1954, and 1965 are the only NZ pennies that have a mintage less than 2 million? It doesn't appear there are any particularly difficult dates there. No worries, there is a Thread running at the moment on the Australian Coin Forum about the 1930 Penny which is interesting but would have some of the older Numismatists from the 1950/60's turning in their grave. A Sydney Dealer purchased several(over 20 according to a rival dealer at the time) 1930 Pennies on behalf of one of the large USA Dealers back around the mid 1960's so keep your eyes open as they're in collections over there somewhere.
