Hi, I recently picked up the following. I know these are relatively common, but I am interested in trying to date it. All I really know is that it was minted during the Tokugawa Shogunate (which is a span of almost 300 years). Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks! Michael   |

 Larger, more straight-on and in focus pictures would help provide an ID; attributing kanei is very difficult and relies on individual strokes. In a general sense, yours is a "new kanei", made after 1668. Thank you! The coin is not magnetic. Here are some better images. Reviewing that website, there is not any characters on the back of the coin.   Any help you can provide with your book or the website, would be much appreciated! Thanks! Michael |

I could be wrong, but looking at the website, I think it is the
A copper alloy coin
Naniwa, fine character (1728)
25mm wide x 1.2mm thick
The calligraphy looks similar to me and the coin is 25 mm wide. It's not magnetic.

Probably close, but the "Ei" on your coin has a large hook at the bottom, whereas it is short on the example on that page. Japanese mint officials apparently used these different strokes as a sort of signature, and the Japanese elite being bored and having too much money, commissioned numismatic books when these coins were current circulating issues. Hello, sorry didn't have a lot of time to look it up yesterday. I can't find one with the fairly large hook at the bottom of Ei, but the claw on Ho appears only on a few types. Yours most closely matches Hartill 4.132:  |
