I also have a 1988 quarter and just wondering if its of value because of the IN in IN GOD WE TRUST.

It may have been from a bit of grease that filled that area, but looking at the coin condition, the vending machine/counting machines/coin damage would pretty much render it an example of what it says on the back of the coin for value.

Vending machines and coin contact often alter that area of the coin in 'IN'. If it were hub doubling you would expect the other devices to be altered also.

Coin contact could affect just one area, or the entire area. Just depends on how the coin was damaged.

On your coin, the right side of the motto devices are showing Machine Doubling. (doubling caused by the machine right after the strike) and flattening from the dreaded vending machines. (Flattening the devices) When the coin was struck, the damage wasn't there, but the Machine Doubling was added to the coin right after the strike.
