CRAP went to the bank to dump coins into the coin machine only to see a coffee pot sitting on top of it. So I asked the clerk what is up she told me they are no longer providing coin machine service. So went to the grocery store where I saw one of those coin star machines they charge 11.8% to dump your coins.
So I rolled them all up and took them to the bank and they gave me cash for them they did not even put them into the roll sizing thing they use to use.
This will put a major block on my coin roll hunting. CRAP

That was similar to my experience, but I was told I could no longer use their "free" service of dumping because my volume of coins broke their machine(s)...twice. Said it costs them $330 to fix the machine. So I went around to find a bank that will take in raw coins w/o fees. Was able to slide in by opening a "business" account. I get my boxes from one branch and dump in other branch w/machine. They direct deposit $ to my account, then do it all over again...over two years now. The slight monthly fees outweigh any I would have to have spent either paying a non-customer charge or a CoinStar.

My credit union doesn't have a coin machine. I wish they did. CoinStar is a rip-off. At work I see people putting in a dollars worth of change only to get back less than that!

My dump bank (credit union) recently got rid of their coin counter machine because it would break often, several times while I was using it. They said it was too expensive to maintain, and I believe it since it was quite old and unreliable. I've since found out that another one of my banks has a machine so I'll start to use that one. For the past few months I've just been holding on to the coins or using Coinstar if I have an Amazon purchase planned. No fees for Amazon gift cards.

If you are coin roll hunting then if you open a roll then put the return coins back into the same or new roll - Have a jar of loose change to replace the coins you take out of the rolls. Banks give out free coin wrappers so there ya go!

Banks are going to continue to look for ways to save money. It is expensive for them so support coin roll hunting. As things change, adapt where you can, but realize that CRH will eventually become impossible.

Either that, or the fees are going to go up to cover the bank's costs. As a depositor/shareholder, that's great - why should I earn less to support somebody else's hobby?

Might I suggest a Credit Union? There are many with counters, and no greedy bank fees. You become part owner.

Quote: usually coinstar has an option to buy givt cards. Yes. I usually get a gift card for the store I am in since I am there primarily to buy groceries and using the Coinstar is the secondary purpose.

Just went through 10 rolls of cents not one pre 1982 cent and they were all the dirtiest cents I have ever seen. Think the bank knows I am a coin collector and purposely gave me the crappiest rolls of cents they new they had. Guess the days of getting pre 82 cents may be gone except for your change.
