Nicknamed Roger Bosso and The Great Count. Roger 1 was a Norman nobleman who became the first Count of Sicily from 1071 to 1101. He was a member of the House of Hauteville, and his descendants in the male line continued to rule Sicily down to 1194.

A nice example of a scarce Sicilian issue. Thank you for sharing it.

The nicest thing about the coin is the kite shield, the horseman is holding.
The shield was developed for mounted cavalry, and its dimensions correlate to the approximate space between a horse's neck and its rider's thigh. A narrow bottom protected the rider's left leg, and the pronounced upper curve, the rider's shoulder and torso. wiki
