Call me crazy, but the curl of the top of the nines are different, and the angles on the tops of the fives seem too different to be considered normal variation, or was this common back in the day?

They look pretty normal to me but the one on the left has a straight top on it. Most likely took a hit.

Circulation flattening is more of an issue. On a doubled die, there are more things to look for: (I know this is a different year)

But note how not just the '9' is affected. Some of the other devices are also affected. Your coin looks pretty much normal, but the circulation flattening caught your eye. So you eye is there, you just don't have a doubled die in view right now. Keep looking. Just try to see what to look for on doubled dies. When you get a roll of OBW cents, before opening them, look at coppercoins.com for what varieties are known for that year. RPMs/DDO / DDR. Become familiar on how they look. Then ope the roll and look through them When looking at circulation finds, keep in mind many people have already check through them, so if the variety doesn't jump out at you, it is probably not there. Keep reading to keep up to date what new information is out there. Search the forum for subjects on years that you need more information. Chances are there is already information about that subject. Then if you don't see it, then ask here. (sometimes readying the threads will open your mind up to subject you've not considered yet.
